Darren Clarke’s breakthrough victory in the
British Open made him the sixth consecutive
first-time major championship winner, dating
to compatriot Graeme McDowell’s victory in
last year’s U.S. Open. That matches a record
established from the 2002 PGA (Rich Beem)
to the 2004 Masters (Phil Mickelson). Clarke
also lengthened another streak—the last 12
majors have been won by 12 different players.
Since the Masters began in 1934, there have
been 13 streaks of at least 10 majors with
a repeat (the current one ties for eighth i
duration). The three longest—concurren
runs of 18, 18 and 17 winners—occurred i
