Birdie bursts
help Crane
top Simpson
;; Ben Crane put
together two bursts
of four consecutive
birdies to come
roaring from, at
one point, six shots
behind, forcing
Webb Simpson into
extra holes in the
McGladrey Classic at Sea Island’s
Seaside course on
St. Simons Island.
It was very nearly
a three-way playo;
at 15-under 265,
but rookie Michael
Thompson, after
leading all day, hit
his drive on the 18th
hole into the hazard
on the right to drop
a shot. Crane won
on the second extra
hole when Simpson,
the tour’s leading
money winner who
struggled mightily
on the greens, three-
putted.
EUROPEAN TOUR
Lewis takes
fast track to
first victory
;; As an amateur,
20-year-old Tom
Lewis turned heads
when he tied for the
British Open lead after one round in July.
Now a professional,
he turned even more
when he won the
Portugal Masters in
just his third start
among the play-for-pay ranks.
Lewis shot a
final-round 65 to
finish at 21-under
267 and beat Rafael
Bello-Cabrera by
two strokes at Oce-
anico Victoria GC in
Vilamoura, Portu-
gal. Lewis birdied
five of his last seven
holes in the come-
back victory, moving
to 53rd on the tour
money list—the top
60 qualify for the
season-ending Race
to Dubai in Decem-
ber—and earning a
two-year exemption.
